School-based decision-making (SBDM) was mandated by state law in 1990 to promote shared leadership among those who are closest to the students. The council is the governing body for duPont Manual High School. It determines school policy for curriculum, staffing, discipline, scheduling, instructional practices, extra-curricular activities and other matters pertinent to the operation of the school. The council usually meets once a month. Meetings have historically been held the first Wednesday of each month at 3:00 pm.
The council is made up of the principal, 3 teachers and 2 parents. To ensure a staggered two-year term, this year’s parent member election will be for one parent representative who will serve a two-year term from July 2018 to June 2020.

2018 SBDM Election Results
Marian Vasser was elected to the SBDM in May 2018 and will serve from July 2018 through June 2020. Jennifer Tuvlin was elected to the SBDM in May 2017 and serves from July 2017 through June 2019. We want to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to Kent Hall for his service the past two years.
SBDM Parent Representative Election Process and Voting
After much research, consideration and discussion, we moved to an online voting system to elect our SBDM parent representative, in order 1) to encourage stronger participation by providing a more convenient method, since we had almost no voters physically showing up in person to vote with the paper ballot system in prior years, and 2) to be more eco-friendly. Recent input from Dr. Shawna Stenton, SBDM Specialist with JCPS, has led us to revisit this choice for the current election. Therefore, we are extending the voting period, and reverting to in-person paper ballots.
Please register your vote for one of our two candidates listed below. Ballots will be accepted at the following times/locations:
4/27 Fri, 7-10 AM Manual office
4/30 Mon, 7-9 AM Manual office
5/1 Tue, 7-9 AM Manual office
5/2 Wed, 7-9 AM Manual office
11 AM – 2 PM Manual office
6-7 PM YPAS lobby (prior to orchestra concert)
8-9 PM YPAS lobby (following orchestra concert)

Note that you will be required to show a photo ID. As a reminder, you may vote in the election if you are the parent, step-parent, foster parent or legal guardian of a student who will be attending duPont Manual High School during the 2018-2019 school year.
Voting ends on Thursday, May 3, 2018. If you have any questions, please contact SBDM Election Coordinator Vidya Ravichandran.
2018 SBDM Parent Representative Candidates:
2018 SBDM Nominations
Any parent, step-parent, foster parent or legal guardian of a student who will be attending duPont Manual during the full term of office may run for a position on the council. A parent is ineligible if he/she is an employee or relative of an employee of duPont Manual or of the JCPS central office or a JCPS school board member or spouse of a school board member. Parents interested in serving on the council are required to attend state-mandated SBDM training (6 hours for new members, 3 hours for experienced members) and attend monthly SBDM council meetings. In addition, candidates should be willing to serve as a vocal representative of the parent perspective on the council; review the agenda and related materials prior to council meetings; take responsibility for disseminating information about council activities to parents; create and utilize mechanisms for obtaining parent input on issues before the council; provide contact information to Manual parents; and meet with other parent council members to debrief on council issues and prepare for council meetings.
If you would like to run for a parent position on the council, please complete the nomination form and return via email to the PTSA SBDM Election Coordinator Vidya Ravichandran or mail/drop-off to duPont Manual Main Office with a deadline to receive of Monday, April 16, 2018. You may nominate yourself or another eligible parent, if you have that person’s consent.
Note: Nominations for 2018 are now closed.
