Manual Students Win Derby Art Contests

Ashton Jones won first prize (click for story) in the High School Division of the 2017 Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation Student Art Contest, presented by The Fillies, Inc. As a first place winner, she receives a 2017 framed Festival Poster by 2017 Official Poster Artist Ron Jasin, as well as a chance to appear in the 2017 Republic Bank Pegasus Parade. All winners receive a medallion, certificate, T-shirt, and a Student Art Contest winner’s pin. Their teachers received special recognition at the awards ceremony. The Festival has offered this opportunity for area students to showcase their creative skills since 1977. The original artwork by area students will be on display at the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade Preview Party beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2.

enVISION VA Magnet Update

If you have a student in the Visual Arts magnet, please join our new parent group – enVISION. Special thanks to Leslie Fowler for taking the lead on starting this group last year. Like the other magnet support groups, our purpose is to provide support and assistance to the VA teachers for the benefit of the magnet and students. Membership is $5, and is open to parents, guardians, and adult family members of VA students, and graduates of the VA magnet.

There are many layers and textures in my world, all that have been graciously accepted.

As art can be, life is full of layers and textures, and if you are one of the fortunate ones, richness too.

I come from a family who takes pride in creativity, detail, craftsmanship and tradition. My grandmother sewed and quilted. My grandfather restored a historical old floor loom from our family and taught himself to weave on it. My family collects handmade quilts covered in embroidery details. Our homes are nests for objects that are infused with the spirits of those lost or experiences fleeting. From these relationships and objects, layers of experience are born and intertwine.
