Twenty-three YPAS/Manual orchestra students took part in the 2018 New York Heritage Festival in NYC from April 4-8. The orchestra received several top honors, including a Gold/1st place award in their division, the Adjudicator Award for their overall score, and Outstanding Orchestra Group for the best orchestra overall. Senior Megan Wang and junior Molly McInnis were also awarded the Maestro Award for their solo performances, which was only given to 10 students in the entire festival (about 1,000 students total).
I recently reached out to our new counselors, Kevin Fowler and Amy Meeron, and asked them to share a bit about themselves. From Mr. Fowler:
I am so excited to have the chance to serve the duPont Manual community as the new counselor of YPAS. While I am new to the role at YPAS, I am not new to the Manual experience. I have a son who graduated from the piano magnet and another son currently in the band magnet at YPAS. I will certainly draw on my experiences as a Manual parent as I support students and their families in this outstanding high school.
As a “Louisvillian” my entire life, I am also a proud graduate of the Jefferson County Public Schools. I graduated from Pleasure Ridge Park High School where I participated in the band program and performed in three musicals: Grease, West Side Story, and Camelot. While performing in the role of King Arthur, I had a fantastic meeting with Richard Harris who just happened to be starring in the role of King Arthur for the Broadway production when it made a tour stop in Louisville. Mr. Harris allowed our cast to meet him back stage after his performance – an incredible WOW moment in my life.
YPAS is hosting Trivia Night to raise money to support students attending the Fringe Festival in Scotland. All proceeds from the event will go towards funding the Fringe Festival trip. We hope to see you there!
Congratulations to the YPAS Percussion Ensemble for being selected to perform at the 71st Annual Midwest Band & Orchestra Professional Development Conference in Chicago, IL December 20-23, 2017. The Midwest clinic is the granddaddy of all music conferences. Attendees consist of instrumental music educators at all grade levels, college professors, professional musicians, famous conductors and numerous composers from around the world. There are over 400 exhibitors, close to 18,000 participants, 650 exhibit booths, 50+ concerts and 100+ clinic sessions. People from over 30 countries and all 50 states attend this professional development conference. This was a very competitive and rigorous audition process and YPAS was 1 of only 2 HS percussion ensembles in the world to be selected to perform a showcase concert. What a true honor! This is the first ensemble associated with the YPAS Band program to ever perform at Midwest in the school’s 39 year history, and the first percussion ensemble to ever do so in JCPS and the state of KY.
