Manual’s Women in Science and Engineering – WISE – club held its annual Expo at the new LG&E building downtown on 3/15. Almost 50 5th grade girls from Bowen Elementary came for a day filled with fun STEM-related activities intended to spark passions for science. After a presentation about engineering from two U of L Speed School students doing a co-op at LG&E, the students participated in an elephant toothpaste demonstration, math relay races, and a building activity with marshmallows, frosting, and toothpicks. During each of these breakout sessions, attendees learned about a different STEM topic and different careers that use that subject in unexpected and creative ways. At the end of the day, students used what they’d learned to solve puzzles and unscramble the hidden message: Who run the world? STEM Girls!
