Science Fair Judges Needed!

Science fairIt is time to sign up as a Judge for the 2017 the Dupont Manual Regional Science and Engineering Fair.  The Regional Fair will be held on March 11th, 2017 at the Health Sciences Building at Jefferson County Technical and Community College (JCTC). Your service as a Judge in this Regional Science Fair is critical to our efforts to promote independent research and inquiry by our students. If you have not done this before, you will be in for a good experience as you listen to young minds and their explorative interests.

Last year we had about 250 students at the Regional Fair. We sent 15 students to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, AR. Additionally we also had 50 students who qualified to participate in the State Science Fair in Richmond, KY. Our students won several category awards and Special Prizes. One of our students secured the Second place in the prestigious Siemens competition and received an invitation to the White House to participate in the Science Fair.

The fair provides an excellent opportunity to showcase their research and passion for science. Participation in the Science Fair opens the doors for our students to work outside their curriculum, pick an area of interest, and conduct scientific inquiry to seek answers to their research questions.

Spotlight: Winner’s Circle Robo Jockeys Robotics Team

WCRJ logo

Student Leadership: The team is led by 5 engineering captains and 5 entrepreneurship captains, determined by the beginning of the team’s winter competition season.

Teacher Sponsors: Alisia McClain and Glenn Zwanzig

What is the mission of Winner’s Circle Robo Jockeys at Manual? To provide real-world hands-on learning to high school students in engineering, technology, business and communications. This is done by exposing students to career-enhancing skills through mentorship from professionals in engineering, business, and other fields. This team is working to build a community of STEM champions – sponsors, mentors, parents and students — who help teens build a foundation for a future in STEM and related fields.

What are the requirements to become a WCRJ member? Membership on the team requires a commitment to attending regular practices, plus parent support to help run the volunteer-managed team (volunteers spent over 2500 hours mentoring and supporting the team last year). The team has two components – engineering and entrepreneurship.
• Membership on the engineering team requires a higher level of commitment, including attending 6-12 hours a week of weeknight and weekend practices, especially during the team’s winter build season.
• Membership on the entrepreneurship team is less demanding – attending practices every other Friday after school to help with business, marketing, social media, game strategy, etc.

duPont Manual Regional Science Fair Fundraising Dinner

Mark your calendars for the annual duPont Manual Regional Science Fair Fundraiser. This year, the event will be held on Thursday, September 15th at the Mellwood Art Center from 6:00-9:00pm. Tickets may be purchased online. Early bird pricing available through September 1st.

This fundraiser enables us to host the Regional Fair, cover the cost for students to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), and to attend others similar Fairs like ISweep. Without the support of the community and parent body, Manual students would not have the ability to participate and excel at National and International level science events. We urge you to attend! It’s a great night and your support is needed.
