Scholarships and Opportunities: Week of Dec. 7

Rumpke Recycling Scholarship:

Valued at $1,000 – for graduating seniors in the Jefferson County Public Schools pursing a two or four year degree at an accredited institution demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship after graduation.  The application is attached here – deadline to apply is March 25, 2016.

Ben Hull Memorial Scholarship:

Valued at $1,000 – Eligible recipients will have demonstrated some of the attributes of BenHull.  In particular, the recipient will have exhibited leadership and perseverance through a challenging situation.   Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to apply.  Also, students will need to seek out a nominator – either a teacher, a counselor, or community representative.

Mr. and Mrs. Hull established the Ben Hull Memorial Scholarship for grants to be made in honor of their son who was a member of the class of 2018.  Ben was only able to attend Manual for a short time his freshman year before he died from Leukemia in July of 2015. Kentucky Federation of Republican Women Scholarship Program:

Valued at $1,000 – for a college bound high school senior girl who has been politically active within the Republican Party.  The qualified applicant will graduate from a Kentucky high school in 2016, is or will be a registered Republican, and plans to enroll at an accredited college or university in Kentucky. The application is attached.

DAR Good Citizens Program:

The DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  Read below for more details:

  • Open to entire senior class.
  • The candidate must have the qualities of dependability(truthfulness, loyalty, punctuality); service (cooperation, courtesy, consideration of others); leadership (personality, self-control, ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation).
  • Only one student from Manual may be honored with the DAR Good Citizen Award.
  • The recipient receives a DAR Good Citizen Pin, Certificate, and Wallet Recognition Card.
  • If you wish to compete for the Scholarship Contest – it consists of two parts.
  • Part 1 consists of the student describing how he/she has tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen.  This part may be completed at home and is to be submitted together with a grade transcriptand two letters of recommendation.
  • Part II is a timed essay to be administered under the supervision of a faculty member or DAR member.  It must be completed in one setting, within a two hour time limit, and without assistance to reference materials.
  • Each contest entry is evaluated by independent, non-DAR judges.  The winning entry is advanced through state and national levels of judging.
  • Each state winner receives an award in the amount of at least $250and a special state DAR Good Citizens Pin and Certificate.
  • Each of the 8 national division winners will receive a cash award in the amount of $500.
  • Two national winners will beinvited to Washington D.C. to attend Continental Congress and will be awarded $5,000 scholarshipinscribed silver bowls, and certificates.

If you wish to be considered for Manual’s DAR Good Citizen Award – please respond to this email no later than the close of school onTuesday December 8, 2015.  Please include your statement describing how you have tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen, addressing the qualities listed above in your written response.

Denison University Reynolds Young Writers Workshop:

June 12-19, 2016

The Jonathan R. Reynolds Young Writers Workshop is an energizing 8 day residential summer program in creative writing for current high school sophomores and juniors who love to write.  Only 36 students will be accepted.

duPont Manual High School PTSA Scholarship:

Valued at $625 – for graduating seniors from Manual High School that are members of the Manual PTSA and have at least a 3.0 weighted GPA or higher.   The application form and more detailed information are attached.
